We are accepting graduate students in master's and doctor's program.
Graduate students from any country are welcome to our institute. Our laboratories are engaged in several graduate programs, including Graduate Schools of Medicine, Chemistry, and Life Science. Our staff scientist (Professor, Associate professor, and Assistant professor) will be happy to promote research with you, an ambitious young scientist. * This bracket is only for applicants who are unable to come to Japan to take the examination, and received a written recommendation from a supervisor based on proficiency and scholastic aptitude

Tuition and fees

Tuition and fees for Hokkaido University graduate are as follows
Tuition ¥535,800
Entrance fee ¥282,000
Exam fee ¥30,000

*It is not necessary for Japanese Government Scholarship students to pay the entrance examination fee, entrance fee and tuition fee, but other students must pay these fees.

Exemption from tuition

Regular students who have excellent academic records but are unable to bear the cost of tuition for financial reasons may have fees waived or reduced by 50%.
In 2007, approximately 96.4% of waiver applicants in the first semester and 97.4% of waiver applicants in the second semester were successful in having their fees waived or reduced by half.

Guidelines for Applicants



Steps to take enroll at Hokkaido University as a graduate or research student:

  1. Find a faculty member in that field
  2. Apply to that faculty member for acceptance
  3. Obtain informal consent for acceptance from that faculty member
  4. You need to have completed procedures 1 to 4 six months prior to intended enrollment
  5. Request an application form for the major or from the graduate school you wish to enter
  6. Pay the examination fee
  7. Submit the application
  8. Take the entrance examination (not required for research students)
  9. Receive a letter of acceptance
  10. Apply for housing facilities for international students
  11. Apply for a student visa
  12. Come to Japan
  13. Enroll Hokkaido University

Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) scholarship

If you wish to receive the Japanese Government Scholarship (i.e., if you wish to be a Japanese Government Scholarship Student), you can apply through the Embassy of Japan or Hokkaido University. To apply through the Japanese Embassy, please ask for details at the nearest Japanese Embassy/Consulate by March of the year before the year of intended entrance.

University recommendation

Students coming to a Japanese university from their own country can apply for the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarship through the university in Japan which they intend to enroll in.
Please ask for application details at the Student Exchange Office.
