QST Quantum immunology

Quantum sensor unravels the mystery of chronic inflammation diseases!

Aging and stress cause not only immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, but also chronic inflammatory diseases such as cerebrovascular diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and dementia, which are inevitable in today's aging society. Our previous studies have shown that chronic inflammation is caused by pathogenic immune cells locally inducing microinflammation around specific blood vessels and invading various organs and tissues by breaking through the vessels. However, there is no preventive measure to detect and eliminate microinflammation, which is the source of disease, at an early stage. In order to solve this problem, we will visualize the location of micro-inflammation using quantum technologies such as highly sensitive quantum sensors (see the attached figure, where Au nanoclusters are used in collaboration with Prof. Katsuaki Konishi and Prof. Yukatsu Shichibu, Graduate School of Environmental Earth Science, Hokkaido University), and clarify how chronic inflammation starts and progresses. This research will be conducted in collaboration with AMED Moonshot. This research will be conducted as part of the AMED Moonshot project.
